Stan Edmondson was born and raised in Los Angeles
, California . The son of an artist , he spent
his childhood surrounded by artists and their
work. He began his studies in art at a very young
age.
As a youth, Mr. Edmondson spent his summers
and vacations from school working on his uncles'
Sacramento ranch. By the age of twelve he was
operating and maintaining harvesters and other
heavy equipment. At this time he also learned
to weld and in his spare time created many sculptures
from scrap iron.
Mr. Edmondson left high school at the age of
sixteen to pursue his art more seriously and
at the age of eighteen attended Cranbrook Academy
of Art in Bloomfield Hills , Michigan where he
spent three semesters as a Studio Assistant to
Jun Kaneko and his students in trade for studio
space. While attending Cranbrook , Mr. Edmondson
took part in several performance pieces and was
also the assistant to the professor of printmaking.
In 1984, Mr. Edmondson was accepted into the
Master of Fine Arts Program at California State
University at Los Angeles (C.S.U.L.A.) under
a special program that admitted artists without
formal educations who were nonetheless acting
in a professional capacity. During his studies
at C.S.U.L.A. Mr. Edmondson opened a gallery
on campus, built an outdoor studio for himself
and constructed a kiln.
Upon earning his M.F.A . Mr. Edmondson made
his living as a handyman while continuing to
make and show his work both in galleries and
at his home. He was assistant to his lifelong
friend and father Leonard Edmondson until his
death in 2001. Leonard Edmondson was a master
printer primarily utilizing the intaglio technique.
In his role as assistant Stan aided his father
as a printer's helper and photographer. Stan
also presently assists the artist Ynez Johnston,
helping her to fabricate her work in ceramics.
He is also her photographer.
Today you can find Stan working at Decker Studios
Fine Art Foundry where he has a position as photographer.
Decker Studios also casts Stan's bronzes.
Mr. Edmondson makes his home in Pasadena California
